Opportunities for Students


Please see your counselor if you are interested in being nominated or if you want to participate in any of the following opportunities.  If no grade is specified, the program is open to current high school students of any grade level.

AFS Intercultural Programs USA
AFS offers year, semester, and summer programs for students who wish to go abroad.  Programs are available for travel all over the world.  For more information go to http://www.afs.org/usa

Boston University Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists
This program runs from July 4 to August 14.  PROMYS is an "intensive experience in creative mathematical exploration" for students in grades 9-12 with an exceptionally strong interest in mathematics.  Tuition is approximately $2,200 and financial assistance is available.  Applications are online at www.promys.org.

Brown University Pre-College Summer
This program allows students to "experience life in the Ivy League" through college-level classes and interaction with students from around the world.  For more information go to http://www.brown.edu/summer.

Explore UT:  Rise and Shine (A Program for Juniors and their Families)
On Saturday, March 6th, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Explore UT is an opportunity to visit the UT campus.  A special program on that day is offered for juniors and their families to ask questions and learn more about UT.  To register for the program, go to either www.utexas.edu/events/exploreut or bealonghorn.utexas.edu

Georgetown University Programs for High School Students

Northfield Mount Hermon School Summer Session
This session blends "academics with athletics, community life, and extracurricular programs."  There is a junior high program for students entering grades 7-9 and a college prep program for students entering grades 10-13.  Students can take courses to earn academic credit.  To apply and for more information go to http://www.nmhschool.org

Outward Bound Ascent Program
This is a program for teens that are struggling.  "Typically our students are just starting to engage in self-destructive behavior but have not gotten into serious trouble . . . yet."  This is designed to serve as an early intervention for teens who are struggling with anger management, defiance, low motivation, truancy, poor school performance or experimentation with risky behaviors.  The program culminates with a three-day parent seminar which is mandatory.  Tuition varies and financial aid may be available.  Visit the website at www.vobs.org .

Princeton Review College Discovery Experience
This is an intensive two-week college admissions prep program featuring dozens of college visits for students entering grades 11 and 12.  Students may choose to participate in Boston or Washington, D.C.  Tuition is around $3,000.  For more information go to www.summerfun.com.  The programs run in June, July, and August.

Sam Houston State University 2004-2005 Freshman Leadership Program
This program is for students who have been accepted to Sam Houston State University and have an SAT of at least 1030 or an ACT of at least 22.  The students who participate receive a $500 scholarship each semester of their freshman year.  For more information go to http://www.shsu.edu/~slo_www/freshman_leaders/index.html .

Savannah College of Art and Design Summer Programs 2004
A variety of programs are offered for next year's sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Students may earn college credit or just "express their creativity" through interesting workshops and field trips.  For more information please go to www.scad.edu/summerprograms.

Summer Discovery Programs
These programs, offered at different campuses, allow students to gain college credit and prepare for college in a fun, safe environment.  The campuses for 2004 are:  UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, University of Vermont, Cambridge University, and University of Sydney-Australia.  For more information go to www.summerfun.com

Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science
This is an early college entry program in association with the University of North Texas.  Students complete their last two years of high school concurrently with the first two years of college, graduating with high school diplomas and 60 or more college credits.  They are then eligible to transfer to other universities, usually as college juniors.  Students should take the SAT during their sophomore year, and should have completed Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II by the end of their sophomore year.  Applications require teacher recommendations, transcripts, and an essay.  For more information please visit the website at www.tams.unt.edu .

Texas State Honors Summer Math Camp
This camp will be held from June 20-July 31, 2004.  Scholarships are available for students with financial need.  Students may fill out an application on-line at www.txstate.edu/mathworks.

United States Achievement Academy All-American Scholar Program
Please see your counselor if you would like to be nominated to participate in a program designed for students who excel in academics.

United States Achievement Academy National Honor Roll
Please see your counselor if you would like to be nominated to be listed on the national honor roll of the United States Achievement Academy for high academic grades.

United States Military Academy at West Point 29th Annual Invitational Academic Workshop
The IAW will run from June 3-9 or June 10-16 and is open to juniors who meet the following guidelines:  Are in the top fifth of their class; are pursuing college preparatory curriculum; have PSAT scores of at least 62 Verbal or 62 Math; have demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office, and honors earned in extracurricular and organized athletic activities.  For an application, see your counselor, call (845) 938-4041 or e-mail admissions@usma.edu before March 1, 2004.  Forms can also be downloaded at http://forms.admissions.usma.edu/AL

United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar 2004
This seminar offers the opportunity for high school students about to enter their senior year (class of 2005)  to visit the Naval Academy for one week during the summer.  Students will experience "all aspects of the Naval Academy including the academic program, physical training, and midshipman life."  Seminars will be June 5-10, June 12-17, and June 19-24.  To apply, go to http://www.usna.edu/Admissions

USC Summer Seminars for High School Students

Washington University in St. Louis Summer Sessions
