Linking to a Second Page
Module 8

1. Now pull down FILE>New>Blank Page (or click the  icon).

2. Now type:
 

   This is my second page and I am really proud of it!

3. Change any formatting as you desire and save the file in your WebProject folder (not the Pictures folder) as Page2.html  (again, note no spaces).

4. Close this file  (FILE>Close).

5. Now you should be back at Page1.html

6. Click at the bottom of the page or at the end of the last line you see.  Press RETURN twice to get some room.

 Now type the following line:
 

    This will show you my second page.

7. Highlight the word This and click on the Insert Link tool .

(You could highlight the word This or the entire sentence - this is your decision as to what keyword or keywords to use as the link)
 

8. In the next window, find the Link To:  section and click Choose File.

9.  Now find and select the name of your second page (Page2.html).

10.  Click Open and then OK.

Notice that the word This changes color and is underlined- this indicates that it is now an active link

Finally!:

11. Now you get to see how this whole package works.  Save and Quit (Exit) Netscape and go back to your desktop (Save, if prompted)

12. Open your Page1.html file from the WebProject folder.

Notice that the file opened in Netscape Navigator, rather than Composer.  You are now looking at how your page would appear to the Internet user from their browser.  Notice when you move the pointer over the word This, that the pointer turns into a hand.

13.  Click on it and observe.

14. You should be on Page2.html.  Click the BACK button on the toolset and you should return to Page1.

 You have just created two pages and linked Page1 to Page2.

But Wait, There's More:

Now we need to put a link on Page2 to return to Page1.  Using the BACK button is OK for two pages but you could get deep into a web site and want to return to the "main" page (or Home Page) quickly, so we will add a link to always return to the first page.

15. Click the FORWARD button to return to Page2.
 

16. Now on Page2, pull down FILE>Edit Page.  (You are opening this page for editing in Composer now)
 

17. Now click towards the bottom of the page and press RETURN twice for some room.  We will insert another picture and make the picture itself the link back to the first page.
 

18. As you did before, click the Insert Image tool, Choose file . . .  , select HomePaw.GIF, OPEN, click the "Leave image..." box, click OK, and see the result.
 

19. Click ONCE on the picture and note the selection box around the picture.  You've selected just the picture, just as you can select text.
 

20. With the image selected from the previous step, click the Link tool, and in the following window, select Choose File, select Page1.html, OPEN, OK.

21. Now SAVE the page and go to FILE>Browse Page or click the Preview button  in the toolset.
 

22. Test out the link you just made by clicking on the Tiger Paw
 

23. Try going back and forth between the two pages.
