Macintosh Graphics-
Creating Images in ClarisWorks
Module MacGraphics-1

We will present a number of ways to get to the same result.  Your methods will vary, depending on your specifics.  We will use two software packages:  ClarisWorks4 and GraphicConverter.  If you have access to other programs such as PhotoShop, you may prefer to use those programs instead.

ClarisWorks can be used to create some graphics and do simple manipulation, although you may want to create your graphics in other programs or obtain them from web-licensed clip art, or possibly by scanned artwork.  We will then manipulate the image in GraphicConverter, a shareware package.

GETTING STARTED-CREATING SAMPLE ARTWORK::

1. Open ClarisWorks to a new PAINTING Document.  You could use a Drawing file, but we will use a Painting for this example so that we have the additional tools.

(Note:  if you aren't familiar with ClarisWorks Paintings, just create a small graphic file as close as you can and follow the steps below.)

2. Using the Paint tools, create a simple, relatively small picture.  Try to keep it under 2 inches by 2 inches, without a background.  For this example, I drew a "Happy Face."

3. If you save your file in ClarisWorks as usual, you will have a slight problem.  ClarisWorks normally saves in its own special format, which generally cannot be used on the Web.  In fact, a ClarisWorks painting can only be saved as a ClarisWorks file or a PICT file, neither of which can be used directly in a Web page.  Our solution is to "Save Out" as a file that can be manipulated in another program and converted into a GIF or JPEG by that other program.

4. Pull down the FILE menu to Save.    Press on the pop-up menu that reads ClarisWorks and drag down to PICT.

5. Name the file Happy.PICT and select your Web_Projects>Pictures folder to save it into.  Then click SAVE.

6. QUIT ClarisWorks.  (Don't save changes...you're being asked to save the file as a ClarisWorks file, but you’ve already saved it as a GIF.)

If you want, you may Quit at this time or continue on to the next module
