| WHAT'S UP
FOR THIS WEEK! Happy New
Year! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing holiday! Thank you so much
for the class gift. I was so surprised and truly appreciate your
generosity and thoughtfulness. I feel blessed to teach this group of
kids who have such supportive parents. Please note that our master schedule has changed to allow for an intervention period for each grade level. This is reflected in the change in my schedule, which can be noted on my "Schedule" link. Don't forget to mark your calendars for Explore UT on Saturday, March 7. (See below for more information). The website should be updated for the 2009 event. Math In grade 2 they will be reviewing subtraction with regrouping this week. Please review all addition and subtraction math facts. Grade 3 will be finishing up graphs and looking at patterns in math. Grade 4 will review geometry covered before the holiday and move on to three dimensional figures. Grade 5 will also be reviewing basic geometry skills and going into more depth and complexity. Grades 4 and 5 also need to review all basic facts. Note: The next Math Olympiad will be January 13. LA We will start new novels this week. Grade 2 will begin A Dog Called Kitty. Grades 3-5 will begin historical fiction novels. Grade 3 will read Island of the Blue Dophin. Grade 4 will read Number the Stars. Grade 5 will read The Witch of Blackbird Pond. FPS NEWS *****NOTE: Our Tuesday sessions will begin tomorrow, January 6th in preparation for the State Bowl Qualifier which is Space Junk. That will be done around Feb. 6. The State Bowl is April 18th for any teams that qualify. Robo Lab Summer Opportunity! If your kids love Robo Lab, this might be for you. It is a summer camp held at UT Austin. They have day camps and overnight camps. Under the "Location" link, you can see the different campus around the country that offer it. When you go into UT Austin, they have a link for pricing. What: "Explore UT: The Biggest Open House in Texas!" When: Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Where: The University of Texas at Austin Who's invited: Students K-12, teachers, and families, everyone is welcome Cost: Free, but you arrange your food and transportation. Students can choose from nearly 400 learning activities on campus. They can assemble a miniature solar-powered car, learn how to achieve global prosperity without global warming, march with the Longhorn Band, see “Birth of the Cool” abstract art in the Blanton Art Museum, learn the Russian alphabet, take part in a trial of Gold E. Locks, and much more. Also by Jan. 2, the Explore UT Web site will be updated with 2009 activities. At that time, you can begin planning which of the 350 or more activities you plan to do this year. Many of your favorite activities from previous years – including the soccer-playing robots and the Goldilocks trial - will be repeated, and you’ll find new activities as well.
