Math

You should expect Math homework every Tuesday.   Of course, they may always practice math facts.  We have had some exciting games of "Around the World".   Our text book has some interactive on-line features that I hope to be able to share with you soon.

We have a TEST over Chapter 2 scheduled for this Friday.  This test is over adding, subtracting and estimating with whole numbers.

We have added Mountain Math to our daily routine.  This is a spiraling curriculum that touches on a variety of fifth grade math skills each week.

Here are some super math web sites.

Science
We have been taking notes and discusing what we know about weathering and erosion.  Your child should be able to explain what causes changes to the surface of the earth. On Friday we will be working with the movement of the earth's plates.  Your child will create a model of Pangea!

CAMP Champions/The Outdoor School
I cannot express how wonderful your children were at The Outdoor School.  I consider myself so lucky to be teaching here in Dripping Springs. These young people were well behaved, respectful,  and full of love for learning.  They asked appropriate questions and worked hard, encouraged others and played fair.  They are a tribute to your parenting.  I hope you have an opportunity to ask the chaperones/parents what they think about The Outdoor School.  It is amazing how motivating it can be to students when we change the environment and use real life to teach content.

Your children sampled lake water and tested it for pH, nitrates, turbidity, and looked at macroinvertebrates under microscopes.  Yes-these invertebrates were collected by YOUR Children!   I was AWESOME!!

They set goals for themselves for the climbing wall and high ropes.  They were then asked how they would transfer setting goals to their daily life.

Turtles were handled and snakes were handled and touched.  Your child should have an understanding of how to identify venomous snakes found in North America.    Our child is prepared for any unexpected encounters with snakes.  Ask them about the snake on the playground a couple of weeks ago!

I wish each of you could have joined us!

        Calendar  under construction!

On Tuesdays as you go through the take home folders,  there may be work you would like your child to put into their school portfolio.  Please send it back to school so your child can add it to their portfolio.  Our portfolio is fairly informal.  Students have required activities to include and they may add some of their own choice.  It is a tool used in the identification process of Gifted and Talented Students.
