Chapter One--"New Moon"
Two strangers, a woman and a man, walked through the deep snow. They wore dark fur cloaks with sturdy leather boots to keep the cold from chilling their white skin. The woman and man held hands as they walked past the thick trees. Their gait was calm as they approached a trail that led deeper into the forest. A flash of blinding light startled them both. A fairy appeared from the snow in front of them. The man knew fairies were dangerous creatures so he stood in front of the woman protecting her. The fairy didn't seem to care. She flew right up to the man's face letting him see a silhouette of a female in the ball of light.
"The child awaits you, mortal. Garon has selected you as the guardian of his child." Her voice was like silk, soft and kind.
The man stood shocked and the woman held on to his shoulders tightly. But the silk like voice disappeared. "Did you not hear me, mortal? The Great God has summoned you to take care of his child! You must follow, both of you."
The fairy flew quickly down the trail. The woman, without haste, ran after it. The man caught the woman's arm. "Don't, Milla!" he said warningly. The woman shook off his hand.
"Did you not hear it? The Great Garon has answered our prayers! We wanted a child for so long, Tuann. I am taking the child he gives us." She ran down the trail with the man following her.
It was not long until they came into a clearing where a child lay asleep in the snow. She looked to be the age of five years. Her hair was so blond that it looked almost white. The dress the girl had on was white and long like a gown and her skin was as light as the snow.
"Great Garon, she is beautiful." The woman whispered. She bent down to put her cloak on the girl to keep her warm. The girl's eyes fluttered open, and she looked at the woman. The woman gazed into the girl's eyes, shocked. "My God, Tuann. Look at her eyes."
The man got down on his knees and gasped. The girl's eyes were a light blue color, but when he looked closely he saw white specks floating in the blue, like stars. His eyes glanced down at the necklace she had on. It was a silver chain with a charm on it. Then he noticed the charm was made of glass in the shape of a crescent moon.
The girl looked around sadly. " Oh, my Starr." She said.
The wind picked up and then quickly stopped. The girl laughed and stood up. She ran into the forest saying, "Starr!"
The man and woman looked at each other then ran after the girl. The woman made a worried call after the girl. She and the man stopped into another clearing. They found her hugging a white animal, a cat. The woman picked up something big and silver on the ground. The holder and the sword in it glowed intensely. The man noticed an engraving on the sword's silver handle. It was a crescent moon like the one on the girl's necklace. The woman too saw that not only was there a moon on the sword but also on the white cat's collar.
"What does it mean, Tuann?" She asked the man.
The man was too busy studying the sword. He took it out of the holder and examined the blade. The blade is made of some sort of glass, he thought, very sharp and strong. He looked back up at the woman.
"They all go together, the girl must be a symbol of the moon. They might be objects that Great Garon gave as a gift. But the sword is-"
A sound of a horn blaring in the distance made them jump. The man put the sword back in it's holder and swung it over his shoulder.
"We must get back to the village, it is Sun Down time. Hurry!"
The woman grabbed the cat and the girl and ran down the trail. The girl hugged the woman as they ran. The woman looked down with happy tears in her eyes. The man checked to see if there was anything else and then started to run after the woman.
None of them noticed the fairy was still there. She put her hands on her hips and smiled. She looked up, "now ya happy?" She asked the sky. She flew away never knowing that a voice answered, "yes."
