What is a Counseling and Guidance
Program?

The Texas Education Agency
(T.E.A.) expects a successful Counseling and Guidance Program to
include both direct and indirect services for children.
Direct
Services
Services in which the counselor
directly works with or coordinates services for children. The counselor's focus should
primarily be on teaching
students strategies for academic and social emotional success.
Following this is counseling groups of children in an academic format.
The goal is to reach the most students in a preventive approach.
Counseling services are academic and short-term. Therapeutic
counseling is not part of a school counseling and guidance program.
1. Classroom
Guidance
Teach preventive lessons in a classroom setting
Monthly lessons on district Tiger Traits
2. Counseling:
Support when emotional needs interfering with school success.
Topics based on need such as assertiveness, anger, grief,
divorce, esteem, bullying, test anxiety, etc.

Short term counseling in groups (6-8 sessions)
b. Short term individual
counseling (1-3 sessions)
Indirect Services
Services that support children
through observation, planning and consulting with parents, teachers and
community.

Individual Planning
Meetings with parents and teachers
for purposes of aiding a particular student
2.
System Support
Working with parents, teachers and
community to support the school environment
