For the 2008-2009 school year, curriculum will be based on modal writing, literature-based project work, daily journaling/writing, and the Barrett Kendall English textbook. 8th Grade Reading
For the 2008-2009 school year, curriculum will be based on the well-developed Holt, Rinehart, and Winston program which builds on literature to form a complete, integrated language arts program incorporating reading, literary elements, and vocabulary as well as speaking and listening. In addition, certain teacher selected and/or generated materials will be used as necessary to meet the needs of students.
7th Grade GT ELA/Reading
Our GT Reading curriculum utilizes a differentiated and substantive Language Arts curriculum focusing on problem solving, logical reasoning, literary analysis, independent research, effective communication, and cooperative learning. It emphasizes the individual student’s leadership and creativity. We will keep a pace and level of complexity commensurate with each student’s needs and abilities. The writing curriculum will focus on modal writing, literature-based project work with a focus on fine arts integration, research, daily journaling/writing, and the Barrett Kendall English textbook. In addition, certain teacher selected and/or generated materials will be used as
necessary to meet the needs of students. All seventh grade students take the Writing TAKS Test scheduled for March 3, 2009.
Teacher Information: "Living richer at lower level " is the new mantra for Ms. Hinson. Her three sons have left the nest , fully feathered and ready for flight. With this new-found freedom, she is exploring local adventures as well as revisiting familiar recreational activities. Perhaps she will be seen on a community theater stage or sighted on a hiking trail in Michigan's Manistee Forest?
Homework Assignments:
All Students:
*8th Grade ELA/Reading
+During the 4th nine weeks of school, 8th grade Reading students will read The Weirdo by Theodore Taylor as their primary SSR book. To prepare them for the rigors of high school, they will complete this book entirely on their own and will take a multiple-choice exam when they finish. Please purchase a copy of The Weirdo by Theodore Taylor for your student to read/annotate at home and at school over the next nine weeks (copies available for as little as $2.20 + S/H online). If your student would like to check out a copy from the school, please direct him/her to an 8th grade Reading teacher. Reading students may take the test as soon as they finish they book, but the last day for testing is May 20. A test review/study guide will be provided (available as PDF on this website) to those students who wish to prepare for the exam. Please note that students are welcome to read The Weirdo during regular SSR time, but they also need to be prepared with an SSR book when they finish The
Weirdo.
In class, we will begin studying The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in class after Spring Break. I encourage students to bring their own copy to class (available online for as little as $1.37 + S/H) for annotation. This is a difficult text, and having a copy to write in will be beneficial to many students. All students have completed the end of novel test for Tom Sawyer. Final exam study guides have been distributed. Our Reader's Theater Project will wrap up the year. Finals begin Friday, May 29th for 8th graders.
*7th Grade ELA/Reading
English final exam study guides have been distributed, and the finals are scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2009.
